Hello lovely readers! :)
I wanted to do a post today to acknowledge what I thought was an outstanding
show from the London Olympics opening ceremony last night. It was directed by
the English Film Director Danny Boyle, probably best known for Slumdog
Millionaire, with the show being called ' The Isles of Wonder'...and what a
wonder it was!
It began with an opening scene of rural Britain, with lovely green pastures
and people playing in the fields throwing apples, horse drawn carriages brought
men dressed in costumes from the Victorian era, suggesting how changes were
soon to come. This then dramatically changed into scenes of the Industrial
Revolution, industry rising from the ground in vast numbers with tall chimney
stacks giving out plumes of smoke; portraying how rapid changes were for
Britain during the 18th -19th Century. The forging from the industrial
processes came together to form the Olympic rings which I thought was utterly
fantastic!

The NHS (National Health Service) was also acknowledged within the
performance, with real nurses from across the country taking part! Children’s
Literature was also highlighted with J K Rowling doing a small reading whilst a
large Lord Voldermort hovered in the sky amongst other childhood villains such
as the Child Catcher, Cruella De Ville and Captain Hook!
Mary Poppins to the rescue!

I was excited to see Mr Daniel Craig as Bond, taking the Queen to the games
who then proceeded to leap out of a helicopter! Ok ok, I know she didn't really
jump out but it was funny nether the less! The show then progressed to include
British popular culture, including the well known radio programme The Archers.
Dancers in all bright colours and get up danced to well known recent songs such
as 'Bonkers' by Dizzie Rascal.
Rowan Atkinson also made an appearance which for me was the highlight of the
show, I found him hilarious trying to get a tissue whilst trying in vain to
keep that one key playing on the piano.
One of the more poignant moments of the night included a tribute to the
London 7/7 victims and those lost in the war, with 'Abide with Me' being sang
by Emeli Sandé with dancers accompanying the rendition.

How can I forget Mr David Beckham who arrived all dashing on
a speed boat down the Thames with the Olympic torch, I'm so pleased he was
involved as I think he has been a great ambassador for the London Olympics. The
torch was then handed to Sir Steve Redgrave a six times gold medallist who
proceeded to light the copper petals which rose up to form the Olympic
cauldron. The British designer Thomas Heatherwick designed it and I have to say
it was stunning, such a beautiful piece of art work!

Overall, I have to say the opening ceremony was absolutely incredible. I
think Britain should be so proud of the show last night!
